Some of our Abbotsford & Langley Grade 6/7 PIE students truly embodied what it means to be global citizens as they took part in a class Walk for Water. With every step, they stood in solidarity with children in Uganda who must walk long distances daily just to access clean water.
Thanks to their hard work, our group raised over $2,200! The funds will be a part of Acts For Water’s current Kasese project, including gravity fed water system refurbishment and sanitation training. Currently, only 7% of the population practice safe hand-washing. 42% suffer from consistent waterborne disease and over 70% walk more than 30 minutes for water from contaminated sources.
Some students shared that the walk wasn’t as difficult as they expected. That insight is powerful — for us, it was just a few kilometers, but for many children around the world, it’s a difficult daily journey. The difference? Our walk brings hope and helps provide something that is missing.
Our students didn’t just walk! These young changemakers came up with some creative ways to contribute by:
- Hosting bake sales
- Organizing raffles
- Collecting cans
- Doing extra chores
- And even selling their beloved Hot Wheels!
This is what compassion in action looks like. We’re proud of our students for their creativity and commitment to being part of a solution to a big problem, and we’re equally grateful to the parents who supported them every step of the way with their projects.
