Thinking Ahead to the 2019-2020 School Year

We hope you had an enjoyable Christmas break and the first month back into routine has gone well for you. It’s always good to have a fresh start in the New Year! Enjoy this time with your families as you learn together at home. What a blessing!

Re-enrolment Opens February 1st for Returning Families

While it seems early, we’ve already started to think about and plan for the new school year! We’ve been working behind the scenes over the past couple of months and are excited to share our plans with you. In previous years, we opened enrolment for returning and new families in March, but with some classes and programs reaching capacity, we want to give returning families first priority before opening enrolment for new families. After returning families have had an opportunity to re-enroll, enrolment for new families will open on March 1st.

Families with learners who have Special Education designations can expect an email from Marilyn Smith, our Director of Special Education & Learning Support Services that outlines details about re-enrolment as it pertains to you.

Elementary Face-to-Face Classes: Community Classes, Outdoor Explorations and PIE (Grades K-7)

We love the relationships that grow through our face-to-face programs and the partnerships that we have with you. Community Classes are attended by almost all of our families and continue to provide an excellent opportunity to supplement the learning at home in a variety of subjects such as Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Physical and Health Education, Fine Arts, and Career Education.

This year we piloted a new program in the Langley-Abbotsford area: Outdoor Explorations! Outdoor Explorations is a place-based, outdoor, observation and play, Creation-stewardship Community Class alternative. We are excited to build and grow this program next year by offering it in two locations on the island and seeking to offer a second location on the mainland. Dates and locations will be announced once details have been finalized. If you are interested in Outdoor Explorations as an alternative to Community Classes, you will have an opportunity to express your interest in your re-enrollment form.

For those who would like more structure and direction, our Partners in Education (PIE) Program fully covers Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and Applied Design Skills and Technology through our blend of one-day a week classes along with weekly projects and practice work which is assigned by your PIE teacher and completed at home.

The Middle and High School Years (Grades 8 – 12)

The middle school years are an exciting time for learners as they transition from the elementary program to high school. If your children are approaching these years, you might be wondering what to expect at RCOA.

We offer a variety of programs and learning options which include exciting events and one-day activities. We also offer classes that run all year and fully cover learning objectives through a blend of class time and home assignments and clubs which run for a shorter term, and supplement the learning at home.

We offer online courses (grades 8 – 12) as well as live-stream (grades 10 – 12) options. Do you prefer to choose your own resources and to design your own program, as you do in our K-7 program? Our teachers are ready to support you in creating personalized learning plans.

Our  Welcome to High School Brochure will give you a bit more information. Questions? Reach out to your home learning support teacher (grades K-7) or our senior program advisor (grades 8-12, Monica Thain at mthain@rcoa.ca).

Open Houses and Grade 7 Shadow Days (Mid to Late February)

The best way to find out what our programs are like is to attend one of our Open Houses or Shadow Days. During our Open Houses, you’ll have an opportunity to hear about our programs, ask questions, and take a peek into our classrooms to see what’s happening.

Our high school team has scheduled Grade Seven Shadow Days, where learners are paired with a high school buddy and attend high school classes for a day. Would you like your grade 7 child to attend? Great! Complete the Microsoft office form by clicking here. Invite a non-RCOA friend by signing them up to attend as well.
