RCOA Teacher Orientation 2017: Encouraged, Edified, Equipped

80+ Regent Christian Online Academy (RCOA) educators met at our Regent Christian Academy (RCA) campus in Surrey this past week for Orientation 2017.  The focus of this time with our staff was to encourage, edify and equip them so that they may prepare their hearts and minds to partner with you, our families, for the 2018-19 school year.  It was a time of incredible worship, worthy collaboration, much sharing of knowledge and relationship enrichment with our goal to prepare well to support you and your children as you educate at home.

Our orientation sessions began Thursday under the guidance of our teacher trainers, Sandra Venema and Margriet Radke. It is our pleasure to welcome to our team 10 new teachers who have already demonstrated a heart for Jesus and a passion for education.  We pray their contributions to your programs are a blessing to you and that you will be a blessing to them.  We look forward to who has yet to join our team in the few K – 7 community class teacher positions still available.  Do you know anyone who may be a fit?  Contact Kevin Laser, Assistant Director of Community Classes at klaser@rcoa.ca.

Darren Spyksma joined the high school team for a session that equipped us with a deeper understanding of the Ministry of Educations new direction for learning.  Darren shared the intent of the new education plan is to move from a focus on covering content to the facilitation of competency development in all learners K- 12.  Here is a brief presentation from Darren that you may find of interest.

On Friday and Saturday, Roz Kerr (Director of Best Practice & Elementary Lead Teacher Coordinator), Andrew Easson (Assistant Director of High School Education and Special Education) and our lead teacher teams planned and orchestrated several skill honing workshops as well as sessions that allowed us to dream about what could be with the hope of making it so.  The rooms were buzzing with fun and excitement as the teachers practiced their skills, brainstormed and collaborated.

Pastor Steve Witmer, Chair of the Board for all Regent Christian Academy divisions, edified us with inspiring devotions.  We are eternally grateful for how the Lord speaks to us through Pastor Steve.  He shared about transitions and leadership God’s way.  Especially dear to my heart was his blessing and anointing of oil on Mark and me as we prepare to pass the leadership baton in February when Mark retires as Principal.

We were blessed to have Derrick Mohammad with us for a session on ‘Why is Christian Education So Important?’.  Derrick Mohamed is Assistant Head of School at Pacific Academy in Surrey.  He serves as chair of the board of directors for the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), Western Canada.  Derrick encouraged us through a discussion on the importance of concentrated Truths and reminded us of the dangers of this world’s desires to dilute it.  May God’s word penetrate all of our hearts so that we can impart His Truth accurately and passionately to our children.

Patti Victor, a Siya:m from Trinity Western University (TWU), equipped us with a better understanding of the First Peoples’ Principle of learning that is thread throughout the New Education BC Plan.  She shared as a believer, the importance of reconciliation from a Christian and biblical perspective.  We look forward to learning more.

Orientation is one of my most favourite RCOA events.  It is a taste of heaven to be partnered in kingdom work on earth with a team of educators who strive to live out our calling as stated by Paul in scripture:  Therefore encourage (admonish, exhort) one another and edify (strengthen and build up) one another, just as you are doing that <you> may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.  We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this common vision as we work to serve you and your children this school year and beyond.
