L.I.F.E Classes – Learning Incredible Skills for Everything!

The RCOA Special Education department is excited to announce that we will be expanding our L.I.F.E. Class locations from Duncan and Victoria to include Burnaby, Langley, and Abbotsford for the 2020/2021 school year, numbers dependent.  We are also looking at offering a LiveStream option.

Who is the L.I.F.E. Class for?
The L.I.F.E. Class is designed for learners with social, developmental and/or cognitive challenges who may benefit from additional opportunities to develop skills necessary for adulthood and work life.  We separate leaners into two groupings: Grade 7-9 L.I.F.E. and Grade 10-12 L.I.F.E. Class.

What is taught in the L.I.F.E. Class?
Learners enrolled in the Grade 7-9 L.I.F.E. Class will cover topics of: home skills, life skills, planning, and social skills. Grade 10-12 L.I.F.E. Class, they will cover topics of: money/planning skills, independent living skills, and work skills.  Intertwined into each of these topics will be a strong focus on developing effective communication and social skills with peers in a group setting. Our hope is that some long term friendships will be formed.

How long does it run for?
Each L.I.F.E. Class will be 2 hours per week for 21 weeks, following the RCOA High School face-to-face calendar.

When will we know if the L.I.F.E. Class in my location will run?
We require a minimum enrolment of 6 students per class.  Sign-up for the L.I.F.E. Class will close on July 15 and at that point, it will be determined which locations will run and which will be combined in a hybrid (in-person & virtual) format.

How much does it cost?
In-person classes will cost $600 in total and hybrid classes will cost $400 in total for the year. For SE learners this cost can be accounted for in their SE budgets. For other learners we do have some grants available to help bring down the cost.
