The New Ed BC Plan proposed course changes will not be implemented for grades 10 -12 until the 2017/18 academic school year; however the change to provincial exams takes effect now. Until the Ministry of Education completes the ‘new’ provincial exams in math and literacy, schools are required to give their own ‘school exams’. The exception to this is the English 12/Communications 12 exam. There continues to be a provincial exam in those courses for this school year.
It is RCOA’s policy (in keeping with a directive from the ministry of education to provide ‘in school exams’) to require summative in-school exams to be a part of each learners’ final mark in the following core subjects:
- Math 10 – 20% of final school mark (course exam)
- Science 10 – 20% of final school mark (course exam)
- English 10 – 20% of final school mark (course exam)
- Social Studies 11 – 20% of final school mark (course exam)
- English 12/Communications 12 – 40% of final school mark (provincial exam)
All course exams are required to be written in front of an approved proctor and wherever possible in one of our Face to Face locations (Nanaimo, Duncan, Victoria, Langley, Abbotsford, Surrey or Chilliwack). Sessions will be provided for these exams in the following months: January, April, May and June. More information about these exams will be provided to learners enrolled Math 10, Science 10, English 10 and Socials 11 in the New Year.
Learners currently enrolled with RCOA in English 12/Communications 12 with the goal of completing the course before or by mid-January have an opportunity to write the provincial exam on the following dates:
- English 12 Tuesday, January 24 at 9 am
- Communications 12 Wednesday, January 25 at 9 am
If you are aiming to write one of these exams in January you must sign up in OTIS under Online Forms, Provincial Exam Sign Up so that we can arrange a venue for you to write at. This exam must be written in a school setting with a certified teacher invigilating. Note that graduates wishing to participate in RCOA’s grad celebrations on June 22/23 must write this provincial exam in January, April or May and not wait until June.
